8 months pregnant, I maneuvered my full shopping cart through a narrow alley in the back of the store, where we finally reached the bathroom only to find that our sacred, over-sized stall was taken. One day after work I was at the supermarket ready to check out, when my 4 year-old daughter frantically squirmed about and asked to use the bathroom. There was certainly no way a baby could be “ready” to potty train. But even more so, I couldn’t understand why anyone would think a baby should be using the toilet, especially since my daughter had struggled at potty training at 30 months old. As a working mother, this life was very distant and seemed almost comical to me. My vision of it in practice included a crunchy, earth mama sitting at home all day, diligently waiting for her baby to grunt or groan as she baked some homemade granola. I heard about “elimination communication” or EC long before I had my second child. There’s much brilliance in her experience, so pay attention: I’d like to welcome our first guest blogger, Jen Rossi, who’s graciously written about her experience with Elimination Communication, also known as EC, Infant Potty Training, or Diaper Free Babies.
